(i2)Insights on Professionalization of Interdisciplinary and Transdisciplinary Careers

Description: Join interdisciplinary scholarship leader Bianca Vienni-Baptista (ETH Zürich) and team science and philosophy of interdisciplinarity expert Michael O’Rourke (Michigan State University) for a generative conversation on the professionalization of interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary careers. Inspired by themes explored in their i2Insights contributions—ranging from institutional transformation and frameworks for strengthening ID/TD cultures to the evolving expectations of research funders and team science competency development—this session offers space to reflect on what it takes to build robust, recognized, and well-supported pathways for integrative researchers and practitioners.

Following short presentations from each speaker, the session will move into a dialogue that invites exploration of the structures, skills, and cultures that enable interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary work to thrive. The conversation will then open to attendees, encouraging a collective examination of current challenges, promising directions, and possibilities for advancing ID/TD careers in diverse institutional and global contexts.

This webinar is the next installment in our 2025-2026 series celebrating the 10th anniversary of the i2Insights blog and repository. Each session highlights enduring “gold nuggets” from the blog’s archives – ideas and practices that continue to influence how we collaborate to address today’s complex challenges.

Speakers:
